Drabble Challenge I stole from Steppenwolf

Challenge:
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn your music player on and turn it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble/ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.

Disclaimer: Not mine, don't sue.
Pairing: River/Kaylee (Firefly/Serenity)

1.

Song: Blue October -Into the Ocean

River was floating. She was at the bottom of a deep ocean. She saw a large dark figure approaching her. She tried to swim away but her limbs failed her. She couldn't breathe. It was going to swallow her whole. Suddenly she awoke, covered in sweat gasping for air. She began to cry and as the tears covered her cheeks she realized she already had been swallowed up. She was alone and yet never alone. Her emotions drifted down the stream of her mind so far away. Her tears became that of joy. Serenity was her saviour, her peace, her love.

2.

Song: Flyleaf - Red Sam

River was bleeding. Her blood dripping to the floor of the medical bay, almost silently. Miranda had solved nothing. Pain was everywhere. And then there was her. Arms wrapped around the slight body. Shaking she looked up into the eyes of her love.

"Let go, I don't want you."

"It ain't right to lie River."

"I'm sorry, you're right. You are my truth Kaylee."

"I know mei mei."

She felt the warmth of the older girls body and heart and she was content.

3.

Song: Sarah McLaughlin - Silence

The silence was everywhere. It was inside of her head. It was outside the ship. No noise. Nothing. River wanted to scream. Scream out for all of the injustices in the world. For what had been done to her, for what had not..

River needed to be released from the shackles of her mind. Who would give her peace? She let out a blood curdling scream. Kaylee was there immediately, climbing into bed with her and holding her until her rage subsides. Her tears cease. Soft kisses meet pale skin.

Heaven. This must be what heaven is, River thinks.

Kaylee sighs a warm puff of air in her ear. River knew Kaylee would come to comfort her when she could no longer hold all of the emotions inside. She wanted to believe Kaylee would be there in the morning. She knew she wouldn't be. Simon could never know.

She would wake up alone and start to sink back into the silence of her mind again, until it once more became too much to bear. Freedom was not Rivers to be had, nor was it Kaylee's.

One day silence would be the only sound River could hear. Then and only then, would she truly be free. No goodbyes.

4.

Song: Bif Naked - Vampire

River stalked the darkened halls of Serenity searching. Finding who she was seeking she waited. Kaylee looked up from the engine directly into Rivers dark eyes. There was a danger there, an intensity.

River began to dance slowly, sensually, dangerously, coming closer and closer to the startled mechanic. Kaylee was frozen in place. It seemed that only the two of them could hear the faint song whisper in their heads.

"I want you." River spoke.

Kaylee did not move, and did not speak, only allowed herself to be consumed.

5.

Snow Patrol - Hands Open

Kaylee finished working on the engine and as she was removing her hands from the gears one got caught. She clenched her hands tightly as she felt the pain. She knew she was bleeding. River sauntered in the room to see the tears streaming down her friends face.

"You're hurt." She ran out of the room and was back in seconds with gauze.

"Open your hands Kaylee." Kaylee shook her head.

River cocked her head then tickled Kaylee's sides. Kaylee giggled uncontrollably, her hands opening automatically. River smiled softly as she bandaged Kaylee's now open hand.

Then there was a moment. Just a moment, that would have passed uneventful if only Kaylee hadn't leaned in..

6.

Song: The Afters - Ocean Wide

River loved Kaylee. Kaylee loved Simon. Tears were all River had to keep her company lately. She confessed herself to Kaylee, confessed her sin. Kaylee had seen through her tears to what lay beneath. Kaylee didn't love Simon. Kaylee cried tears of regret and River saw through her tears. They held on to one another when nothing else made any sense.

They belonged to one another now. They watched the stars outside the cockpit and promised each other the tears would end and they would find a nice planet to live on where they could watch the sun rise and set, together. They would find a place near the ocean, a place for them and no one else. Love, the only redemption for all the pain and tears caused and shed. They knew they would find a way to make it happen. They had to.

7.

Song: The Cliks - Soul Back Driver

River was lost. She was searching. Where was her soul? It once had inhabited her, now it was missing. Kaylee now possessed it. She held Rivers heart as well, though in tiny pieces, she cherished it. She mended it. She.

Rivers spirit was broken but slowly, ever so slowly, she felt the bits come together and mesh with Kaylee's. Kaylee's spirit was pure, her soul strong, her heart whole. She had given them all to River with a smile and a kiss.

River didn't think she deserved it. But that didn't matter because Kaylee had already decided. And now they were so close they were more one than two.

8.

Song: Treble Charger - How She Died

"No." Rivers eyes widened. Kaylee's body lay stretched out, pale and cold.

"No." River closed her eyes. She didn't want to see. She wanted to erase it. She wanted to go back in time. If only she had done one thing differently. If her pride had not stopped her she could have said something, anything to change the outcome of this sad story.

She reached out slowly to take Kaylee's hand. No more warmth, no more spirit, no more heart beat and no more Kaylee.

River dropped like a sack of bricks, out cold, not as cold as Kaylee though.

When she awoke faces floated above her, none of them the one she really wanted to see however. She closed her eyes to the harsh reality of life.

9.

Song: Linkin Park - In The End

Kaylee watched the time go by, second by second, minute by minute, day by day. River kept drifting further and further away from them, from her. She tried to hold onto her but she slipped through her fingers.

At the last second of the last day the last thing Kaylee would ever hear River say was, "It doesn't matter."

Kaylee fought with Simon more and eventually it all fell apart. Kaylee tried so hard to keep them together. River had trusted her but none of that mattered now. It was all over and River was right, it didn't matter. Pushed as far as Kaylee could go she just stopped. Simon was gone, River was gone, and now she too would be.

10.

Song: The Afters - Beautiful Words

A few words were all it took. Kaylee was so surprised. She never would have thought words like that had lived inside of River's heart.

"I don't want the pages of our story left unturned." River had whispered as she reached out a small hand.

Kaylee had hesitated. Simon. But she couldn't turn River away. She loved her, every wonderfully scary thing about her. Her beautiful words pierced Kaylee's heart. Their story would unfold, but into what?
